We meet in the morning at The Commons buildings at Bath Spa University, Newton Park Campus, Bath, BA2 9BN. Come to Starbucks from 10am for drinks and breakfast even if you’ve just jumped out of bed! After we’ve had chance to have a drink and catch up, our service begins at 10.30am.
We have an evening service called Freedom In the City and it meets in various bars in Bath high street at 5pm. Check out the website for details of which bar!
We’re a community of everyday people, who are journeying together in understanding Jesus and His ways, works and words and learning how we can live a life where we try and follow Him.
Our meetings have loud bands who help us use words to express our gratitude to God- we sometimes call this a way of worshipping God. We also have teaching that is relevant to our daily lives and applies the Bible so we can understand how God wants us to live. We also have time where people who want to be prayed for can have that and we love to see miracles and the Holy Spirit connecting with people. We love to chat and connect with each other and we look forward to seeing what God has planned for us- although in the morning meetings we stick to a fairly regular structure due to the amount of kids in kids work who can only enjoy that much fun for an hour or two before needing lunch!
Our leaders and founders are Betsy and Andrew de T who you'll probably see at the front of church or around Starbucks. They'd love to meet you, so do say hi and come along to a 'belong' meeting to find out why they started Freedom and why they still feel passionate about the vision! Other leaders will be there for you to meet too!
If you arrive by car, you will be able to find parking on campus. Our First Contact Team will be posted at the entrance to offer assistance if needed! We can offer car parking money for anyone unable to pay the £2 car park fee and we also have a limited number of parking permits for those who are unable to walk far. There are disabled bays at the front of the Commons for disabled badge holders.
As you come into the building, a member of the Host Team will welcome you and give you a welcome bag full of chocolate and useful information about church. You’ll also get a pack of vouchers for a free Starbucks drink on your first three visits!
Our meeting takes place at 10.30am. A steward will help you to find a seat. During the service, our kids and youth have their own groups to go to- see below for more information. Once signed in, we have a special security team making sure the kids are safe so you can relax and enjoy the main service. If you have little ones who are too little to be left, you're welcome to use our special baby corner at the back of the room.
Check out our Sales and Information Desk for resources and further information about Freedom Bath+Bristol either before or after the service. Connect cards are available to fill in if you'd like us to contact you further. If you want to become a part of the church then come along to 'Belong 1' and find out more about how the church as started, what the main vision and values are and see if you want to join the Freedom mission!
We are committed to the youngest in the church and have fantastic fun groups for them to go to. When you arrive a steward will show you where to go and connect you with another family to help you navigate your way through the systems we have for kids to go to their age group. There are Freedom Babies, Freedom Tots (2-4 yrs), Freedom Kids (4-10's) and Freedom Youth (11-17 yrs) groups. We look forward to meeting your kids! Biscuits, fruit , rice cakes and drinks will be served to the kids during kids’ Club. Youth will be given a Starbucks voucher for a complimentary drink!
As a local church here in the heart of Bath, we are a community of everyday people in which Jesus is central to all we do. We are journeying together in understanding Him and His ways, works and words and learning how we can live a life where we follow Him. We want people to find life, hope and purpose. We believe that Jesus is life transforming and church is the hope of the world.
For more information about who we are, why not take a look at our 'Welcome to Church' booklet, found here
We'd love you to be part of the story!
Andrew and Betsy moved to Bath as a couple to start a new Church specifically to help those who don't know Jesus, those who have walked away from Jesus and/or Church, and to see God grow a strong and healthy Church. They wanted it to be a church that would bring hope and life to the cities of Bath and Bristol. After praying and waiting, things started to develop one week when 6 different people who didn't know each other all rang up to find out if a new Church might be starting in Bath...what a God coincidence!
The de Thierry's moved to Bath in September 1998, and this group of people got together and became a small group which met every week. This group then began to meet at the clubhouses of the Bath Rugby club, with the purpose of getting a team in order to launch the new church plant in 2000. The team continued to meet there on alternate Thursdays for much of the year.
As a result of steady growth, it was decided that the Church should launch Sunday meetings from January 2000. Initially, we met on Sunday afternoons in Claverton Down, but by March 2000 we had moved to Haysfield Lower School in Oldfield Park and we began meeting on Sunday mornings instead. From September 2000, the Church grew rapidly to having many diverse Small Groups meeting mid week, along with exciting and flourishing children's and youth groups catering for ages 0-18 years.
The greatest influence on Freedom Bath and Bristol are the teachings of John Wimber. The de Thierrys were very involved and influenced by the things that Wimber taught, said and did and you'll see that in the life of the church.
We bought a building in 2005 which housed our offices, a large meeting room, art studio, an outdoor decking area, and room for all our community projects. We were based in this centre on Roseberry Road until June 2011 when we moved into Freedom House. This building on Lower Bristol Road has been renovated and is now home to our offices, youth rooms, an art studio, and kids rooms which also serves another charity called the Trauma Recovery Centre. We are working towards building an auditorium onto this building.
We have strong friendships with other church leaders in the local area, the UK and overseas. We have been part of the Hillsong and Life Church, Bradford networks for many years and appreciate their support.
We have lots of exciting plans and dreams for the future, as we see people connect with Jesus, as we plant new churches, birth new projects, speak up for justice, and see hope for the hopeless. We are excited as we hear the sound of what God is doing and we are amazed at how He is positioning us to see more and more people set free to know Him and experience His Freedom. We are Freedom, and we can't wait to see what God has planned for us as He builds His Church.
